about

Gug Dotehu was a wealthy nobleman (werq) who lived Kushmezyquey (now Baksan) and own a mill and a shop. After the October revolution and the civil war he had to close the shop as the White Army was retreating under the unslaught of the Red. Dotekhu was afraid to lose his considerable fortune and left his homeland.
According to one source, he went missing and according to the other, he escaped abroad after joining the troops of Zaurberk Dautokov-Serebryakov retreating to Novorossiysk.
Dotehu’s wife Bykhat who played harmonica stayed in the homeland and composed this song together with his sister Muslimat. The song is based on the melody of the lamentation song Marmyquom yi wored. Composed in the territory of the present-day Adygea Republic, the song quickly spread in Kabarda and in Cherkessk. Harmonica players transformed it into a dance melody now known as Dotekhu yi qafa. Nowadays it is performed in multiple variations.
In this recording tried to combine three songs in one. The following songs have been included in our mix:
Marmyquom yi wored;
Qanoque yi wored most famously performed by Raisa Qesht;
Qerbech yi ghybze most famously performed by Khazhdal Qunyzh.
The song is performed in the first person while I sing it in the third.
The shychepshyne solo in the final part of the song is a qafa in which three melodies are mixed. The melodies come in the following order:
Dotekhu yi qafa (Dotekhu’s dance)
Laghunyghem i qafa (Love dance)
Tlyzh qafa (Dance of the Old Men).
In our solo we imitate the sound of the Circassian harmonica (pshyne) with string instruments. The shychepshyne stands for the right hand and the cello for the left hand.
